Stuck On

Getting Rid Of

The Deadwood in Life,

Or

Living in the Light?

Proverbs 25:21-22

If your enemies are hungry, give them bread to eat; and if they are thirsty, give them water to drink; for you will heap coals of fire on their heads, and the Lord will reward you.

Luke 6:35

But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.

Words of Grace For Today

When we go through life keeping a ledger, even just sort of in our heads, of good things we’ve done balancing out the bad things we’ve done, working to tip the balance towards the good in order to be pleased with ourselves, well then ….

Then we will of course do good to those who can return the favour, and we will lend a hand to those who will help us in return.

But if we are followers of Christ then that all changes.

For we do not need to keep a ledger and tip the balance towards good so that God will accept us, bless us, and give us life abundant. No, God, already long before we recognized our own sins, accepts us, forgives us, blesses us and gives us life abundant. Then not only do we do good for those who can return the same to us, lending as we are able, we also do good especially for those who cannot or will not return good to us or others.

The truly needy, will always find a way to return goodness to others as they can. They understand what it is to be in need, on the edge of surviving. And our enemies, who may choose to return evil for the good we do them will only demonstrate their refusal of God’s blessings yet again. How that ends for them is in God’s hands, though one cannot expect it will be great, just as when we refuse God’s acceptance, forgiveness, blessings and abundant life we can expect that it will not go well for us.

So how will we live today: trying to balance the ledger that God has already washed away in the waters of baptism,

OR

will we give our all as God has givens us so abundantly to do?

With out choices this day, which world do we choose to live in?

My Cry!

When It Is All Darkness,

Getting Darker,

To Whom Do We Turn?

Psalms 18:6-7

In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because God was angry.

Mark 4:38

But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’

Words of Grace For Today

As he travelled, studying and practising healing on those who came to him desperate for help, Julius came across this fragment of writing.

Last night the river rose another 2 meters. It’s now 6 meters over flood levels. Both bridges to town are covered and the only way to town is up the point of the valley’s junction, up and across the prairie fields (through two cattle fences -but that is much better than up the old railroad grade winding up to the prairie) to the road to the power station. Then back towards town, but then further away to reach the road that goes across the top of the dam and finally on 39 into town, all told more than 45 minutes instead of the usual 5 minutes. The yard, the old house, the drive and the well are all flooded. If tonight the river rises again even another meter this house will flood like all the neighbours have already in the last two weeks. What will we do then? Will we have power? Will the house wash away? Will we be washed away as well? It’s been so many days now, each with a new report of it getting worse with new threats and new losses. I’ve cried for help so many times. I’m out of voice to cry.

Julius knew this had been just the beginning of the angry climate. Now they were fortunate to live in a place high enough and stable enough that threats were infrequent, only 50 or so a year. One neighbour of their community had fled from an area not even that far away, a community called Fisigner, when a river had flooded and taken 10 homes in the first hour. Everyone left had run. They had looked for other survivors whenever they met other people, or as Julius travelled about, but there were no news of any Fisigner survivors.

Julius thought, what could they do if, when the called to God to be saved, God answered with anger and more violent storms and floods and wildfires and earthquakes. Then he remembered how Jesus woke from his resting in that fishing boat with Peter and the others. The seas had churned and threatened their very lives, yet Jesus was calm. He spoke and the water and the wind were calmed.

Julius decided he would remember that as God’s answer to their pleas.

Finding Our Way,

Our Wondrously Blessed Way

Through Each Day.

Zechariah 3:9

For on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven facets, I will engrave its inscription, says the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the guilt of this land in a single day.

1 John 2:2

… and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Words of Grace For Today

It is a great challenge to forgive someone who has done great damage to one’s self.

Consider the murder of one’s loved ones.

Consider the foreign ruler who with no just cause invades one’s country and decimates one’s community and livelihood and security … and peace.

Consider the liar who spreads lies and those who believe and retell such lies, until one’s reputation is destroyed and one’s way of life has become impossible leaving one living in the street or bush.

Consider the corrupt police who kill people without recourse. Or the corrupt judge who sentences innocent people to jail and makes decisions that are not even supported by the lies brought as ‘evidence’ to court.

The people so traumatized and ruined by such evil doings is nothing new. It goes back to the beginning of human times. It will continue until there are no more humans to do such things to others. One such new story really is of no interest to most people, since the injustices only can continue to happen when and because almost all people accept these injustices as ‘part of the woodwork’ of life, tolerated as long as they are not directed against them, or protested against (but only by marginalized people, to whom people simply do not listen to.)

God knows all these stories, from the beginning of time to the end of time. God knows such evil destroys not only the victims but the perpetrators. The best of life is still possible for the victims, if they are able to forgive the perpetrators (which is not to simply tolerate that such injustices continue, far from it.) The best of life is only possible for the perpetrators, if they recognize they are forgiven and are on that basis able to amend their lives.

So God provides all that for us, makes it possible.

God forgives everyone, from the beginning of time to the end of time. God makes it possible for us to forgive as well, especially to forgive ourselves. And God makes it possible for us to amend our lives so that we can live lives blessed to be blessings for others.

God accomplishes this again and again in a single day for us all.

What will we do in a single day to forgive the perpetrators who have destroyed our lives, to amend our lives, to share this abundant life with others, and to give God thanks for making a blessed life possible for us?

The Clouds and the Sun Pass Above Us All.

God’s Blessings Flow Among and Into Us All.

Psalm 119:172

My tongue will sing of your promise, for all your commandments are right.

Romans 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Words of Grace For Today

Julius discovered this fragment held by a healer he visited in one of the neighbouring communities on his travels to learn more about healing:

The commandments of God, collected in the Old Testament, like many other collections, are not unique to the Old Testament. They are gathered wisdom of humanity, often stated with variations specific to the region of their ‘origin’ or ‘publication’. Yes, God works in many and various ways to help guide us to live well, and to give life in it’s fullness to others.

Likewise, the Gospel of Jesus is not entirely unique, building on the Old Testament, refining and augmenting it. And yet there is one aspect that threads it’s way through the Old Testament and the New Testament which seems to be unique.

It’s almost impossible to implement, or even write about for a community of faithful people, without it being reduced to something else, something ordinary instead of shockingly profound and life giving.

That unique thing about Jesus’ Gospel: that salvation is free. One cannot earn it, or even meet God half way in order to claim it. It is a gift.

The question of life is no longer, ‘What must we do in order to please God and live well?’

Instead the real question of life is, ‘Since God has already given us the fullness of life and the ability to live it, how will we choose to share it with others, for only in sharing the goodness of life, is our life lived to it’s fullest and in the way God created us to live.’

Since it is free, not earned in any way, it is also not restricted to only some people, some people born into our clan or nation.

This free salvation is for everyone.

He promised himself that this would be part of each interaction with people who came to him for healing. Then he thought to himself, as we may also: ‘So how will we share it with others today?’

Leviticus 19:2

Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.

Ephesians 1:12

so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory.

Words of Grace For Today

Julius spent all his spare time after he decided to become a healer learning from anyone everything they knew about healing. It was not insubstantial, and the wisest words he learned were spoken by one who took in people suffering from inexplicable illnesses. Their bodies functioned completely normally, sometimes better than most. But their minds were in various states of jumble and seemingly malfunctioning, at least according to what everyone else expected.

This woman, or was she a man, it was hard to tell really, said clearly that what people most needed to hear was that they were valuable and held in great esteem for just being who they were. After all it is from the ones we expect the least that the most unexpected discoveries and advances are made. She took him around to meet with her guests as she called them. Seth heard voices and sometimes exploded in frustrated anger at everyone around. But they had learned, and he had learned, that these would pass, and he could easily go or be taken to a safe space and throw his fits there. During those fits ideas would come to him, sometimes with stark clarity, sometime muddled, and he would record them as best he could. Often his ideas were obvious insights into how they could all improve their living in this Kur, as they called it, and old word for a place of curing and healing.

Zephania sat most of the day, seemingly staring into space. She would say she really did not know time, yet the images she drew and the words she used to describe their Kur, the world around them, the whole planet, and parts of the universe, even the settlement in the Andromeda galaxy that no one had heard from for as long as anyone knew, were astounding. Though she seemed not to be present, she was even more present than anyone else. When they needed to remember something from the days at Kur, they would ask her and she could recount everything in exact detail, even things they knew she had not witnessed with her own eyes.

They started to record as much as they could, especially the information from the AndromedaB Settlement as they called it. Lots of that was gibberish to them.

Julius asked to read the records. He was amazed at the details about healing that her record contained. He learned more reading Zephenia’s journal than anything else.

From that day onward, whenever Julius met with people, he began by telling them how valuable they each were, and how much they could contribute to help everyone live better lives. He started using an old word, “You are holy.”

Julius Would Have Been Envious

Of Such An Off-grid Camp,

With All It’s Simplicity

and Technology

(like solar power.)

Second Chronicles 30:18-19

For a multitude of the people, many of them from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the passover otherwise than as prescribed. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, ‘The good Lord pardon all who set their hearts to seek God, the Lord the God of their ancestors, even though not in accordance with the sanctuary’s rules of cleanness.’

Mark 2:17

When Jesus heard this, he said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’

Words of Grace For Today

On his 16th birthday Julius had been out helping neighbours prepare for planting. The preparations were hard work, since long before the snow would melt they had to be ready for the window for planting a successful harvest would be open most years for only 7 days, and when they came could be anything from early April to late June.

He’d read from Sotorus’ journals and three other even older journals that people used to have liquids they could put in machines and use them for the hard work of planting, travelling, and even creating electricity. It was burning those liquids by so many people that had changed the earth’s weather to be more volatile and unpredictable. In the end it was the thing that decimated the human population from an unbelievable 12 billion down to a mere billion, though some said in the dark times it was down to a mere million. But even today no one could know. There was no way to count people across the face of the earth. People only knew about the earth being round and the continents and the vast seas and the expanse of space and the existence (at least at one time) of a settlement in the Andromeda galaxy so unreachably far away. It was the second settlement for everyone knew from Sorotus’ journal that the first had failed.

That day on the 8th farm, as 10 farmers gathered to help each other prepare for planting, and more than 100 others helped as well it started. Every able-bodied person helped, for it was their food the farmers would try to grow. No one knew then, nor did they know now, what it was. When that 8th farm was finally ready, 10 people fell ill. Julius volunteered to provide care for them. He was run off his feet, for they were constantly thirsty and then hungry even though they kept nothing down, and the messes they made with feces, sweat, and blood was almost too much. Julius had never worked so hard in his life. No one, except the one person who dropped off at a distant rock food and water each second day, came close to the spot in the trees where they stayed under a shelter Julius had built of branches and leaves and mud.

Then as the 9th farm was finally finished, another ten people fell ill, and they arrived as well. That same day 5 of the original people fell ill, 1 recovered enough to help Julius, and the other 4 got better but could barely move or talk. At least they ate and drank and made no more messes. When the 10th farm was finally finished, it repeated. Now three people cared for 10 severely ill, 2 had died, 2 recovered, and 8 were unable to move but ate and drank normally. Those recovered, and Julius for some reason, were marked with trails of dark spots down both sides of their faces that extended the length of their bodies to the tips of their toes.

They would for the rest of their lives be marked. The few who were able to have children, Julius was one so blessed, had children that were marked as well. While the marks interfered with life not one bit, they would be used again and again as reasons to exclude and denigrate these people.

That was not on Julius’ mind at all when, after the 10th farm’s ill-helpers arrived and he discovered that his life purpose had arrived in his lap. He would learn to be a healer. Later he would learn they used to call them doctors in Sotorus’ time. He already knew that Jesus was a healer, and since Jesus walked with him, it fit so well that he would help those who were ill.

Later he learned that even the healthy looking people carried many diseases and were actually more ill and deadly dangerous to others, than those who came down with the spotted-cranks, as those farmer’s helper’ disease came to be known. It was the not knowing one was ill that left them free to spread death in their wake to so many people. Though rituals were developed to ‘protect’ farmers’ helpers from falling sick, it had little effect except to make people feel invincible, when they were certainly not.

Julius wrote in his journal that day, “Correct rituals do not save people, and God helps in many and various ways those who are ill, even the majority of us humans who do not know it.”

So Much Technology Obscures and Distracts Us

Under Which All Generations Have Lived

Daniel 4:3

Hebrews 12:28

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe;

..

Words of Grace For Today

Sotorus’ journal lay before Julius. As he read, through his young eyes he began to recognize how many generations had lived, struggled to survive and flourish at times, and died. Among them were Sotorus’ father, Peter, Peter’s father, Isaac, and Isaac’s sister, Galilea, and their parents, Sotorus’ great-grandparents, Doug and Dawn. He read of their first venture into another galaxy to find a planet where humans could thrive. Yet it ended with an emergency evacuation and then a 2nd settlement at another planet, though his ancestors had returned to earth with the human population reduced by 90%.

In each generation Julius read how his people had oriented themselves by Jesus’ Word and Light. It had not been simple or naive. It was as great a challenge as any.

Yet as he had learned as a young child already, Jesus walked with his family, and with him. They were mystics, people said, able to see God and God’s works in the common every-day wonders that God provided to them all.

Julius that day before his 13th birthday started to form, what would guide him through the challenges of his life, a foundational understanding, an orientation for life, and a purpose for his own life. He would honour his ancestors and their work to help others with their life’s work. He would strive to give life abundant to all people. Little did he know what other people would make that cost him, and what joy and pain, love and hatred, hope and despair that would bring him.

So he started to realize, as his ancestors had in every generation, that life is full of possibilities, full of challenges, and always filled with God’s presence.

He thought (as we might also): What will our days be like this, another ordinary and extraordinary day in Easter?

Through the Thick of Life,

Christ’ Light Orients Us

To Life Abundant,

by giving life to others

Genesis 28:16

Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!’

Luke 24:32

They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’

Gospel for Today: John 10:1-10

‘Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.’ Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.’

Words of Grace For Today

Jacob wakes and is convinced (after his struggle with the angel) that God is in this place, and he did not notice.

The disciples on their way to Emmaus walk along with a stranger who opens their eyes to the truth, from the scriptures and all of life. Yet they do not recognize this person, not until he shares bread and wine with them and in the eating the recognize that this is Jesus, risen from the dead.

Many times in life we do not recognize God or God’s works, as we are so engaged in trying to ‘fix’ our own lives, and to compensate for our sins and the sins of so many people around us, and who have gone before us.

On this, the Good Shepherd Sunday, we read that Jesus is the door, a door that is always open to us all, each and every one of us, though we certainly do not deserve such a welcome in the flock of Jesus. We also read that Jesus has the voice that we recognize, sometimes not in our busy minds and hearts, but always in the foundation of our being.

By this voice, by this Word, our lives can be oriented. Orient, the East.

Martin Luther called it the ‘morning land’.

As by the sunrise of each morning we orient ourselves for the day, so by Jesus’ Voice and Word, by Jesus’ Light rising out of every darkness, we can orient ourselves, not by our own strength, but by the power of the Holy Spirit working in us.

Thus oriented for this day, we have plenty of work ahead of us, sharing all Jesus’ openness to us sinners, God’s grace, and the precious gifts of the Holy Spirit to share with so many people.

So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me.’ You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house.

1 Timothy 6:17-18

As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share,

Words of Grace For Today

Fundamental to life abundant is to give it all away, every last breath we have, and of course every thing, and all the rest.

God always gives us enough.

Not enough to feed our endless covetousness, lusts, greed and thirst to make our own lives at the cost of others.

God does, though, give us enough to satisfy God’s desires for us: to live and live well.

This is how God created us to live.

Today, how else would we try to live, when as God intends brings joy, contentment, trust, and hope to the core of our being?

Where Will God Send Us Today?

First Kings 20:11

The king of Israel answered, ‘Tell him: One who puts on armour should not brag like one who takes it off.’

Ephesians 4:23

… and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds

Words of Grace For Today

When warriors go to war, armour is a good thing to put on. When one no longer needs to fight, one can begin the struggle to make peace last. That’s the challenge of God’s holy people.

We don’t start out that way though, or rather we may start out that way but we all get lost early on in life. Instead we work to fight for ourselves and our own. God has other plans for us.

God chooses to transform us from fighters for our own interests into peacemakers, caregivers, life sustain-ers, bearers of words that inspire and give life abundant, actors of forgiveness and grace and mercy, and whatever God gives us to do.

God chooses and we are transformed in our hearts & minds, no longer striving to be good or good enough for God, Accepting who we are, sinners needing rescuing & acknowledging who God is, and then living out for others what God has done for us: loved us, forgiven us, freed us to be now sinner-saints,

We look the same on the outside, but in our hearts & minds, God has transformed us, as God intended at our creations, made us beautiful like colourful butterflies, precious, holy servants, God’s people. God sends us out, volun-tells us to care for God’s precious creation & the creatures in it, including our neighbours, all of them, of all kinds.

Each day there’s the work of love to do, serving others, even if it takes away our very breath, in awe & wonder as God brings us home, to the place Jesus prepares for us.
