Facing God

Seeing God is Not Like Seeing through Thick Fog.

Exodus 33:11

Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then he would return to the camp; but his young assistant, Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the tent.

John 15:15

I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.

Words of Grace For Today

The tradition was that if one saw God, one would die from the experience of such awesome power.

Then Moses spoke to God on Mount Sinai, returning with a face as white as a ghost.

Along comes Jesus, God’s son, and God as well. People encounter him in everyday settings. Twelve disciples, and probably more, follow him around the countryside, seeing him heal people’s illnesses and despair, teach with authority, and command even the wind and the sea.

Mostly they are, as the Gospels report, only somewhat aware that Jesus is God. Then he calls them not servants but friends, friends to whom he has revealed what God the Father has told Jesus. That’s a lot of divine disclosure.

And we inherit all that, through the Scriptures’ witness and the witness of Christians who have gone before us, teaching us, healing us, disclosing God’s Word to us.

That would make a huge number of people our friends, sharing in the information given Jesus by God.

I am always suspicious of people who I barely know who call me friend, for my experience is they are not about giving to me as their friend. They are about taking everything I might entrust to them, and abusing it and me with it.

That does not distract from the friendship that I have experienced many times from people I do not know, who are Christians, generous, gracious, and welcoming as Jesus was for all the terribly good sinners of his day (and all days since.) True friends do not use it as a demand, an opener and pry bar into one’s life, an avenue to use others to get ahead. True friends are about giving, and giving generously so that others can life, and live well.

That’s how we see God face to face, in the receiving of grace from strangers and in the giving of grace to everyone, even strangers.

God’s Kindness,

And Then What?

Our View Of Wonder Is Not in Nature, Wonderful As It Is.

It is God Given.

First Samuel 2:30

Therefore the Lord the God of Israel declares: “I promised that your family and the family of your ancestor should go in and out before me for ever”; but now the Lord declares: “Far be it from me; for those who honour me I will honour, and those who despise me shall be treated with contempt….”

Romans 2:4

Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

Words of Grace For Today

Listening to CBC’s Ideas: Astrophysicist Hubert Reeves on The Origins of Us (the Big Bang Theory), a popularizer of science little known in the English world, but famous in France, who died Friday, 13 October 2023:

The world began with a bang.

A very big bang, a theory that is ‘proven’ by 10 things that it predicts, which have since been discovered to exist.

We have messed it up royally.

God is kind, dealing with us with forbearance and patience.

So what then?

Snippets for the conversation with Reeves:

The universe is strange, more strange than we think, more strange than we are able to think.

Our way of thinking does not need to reflect reality. Reality is very counterintuitive.

We think in an operational way, that provides for our survival.

What is the power of our way of understanding the world.

We have limited intelligence.

There is no guarantee that our way of thinking is able to go the profoundest depth of the universe.

Our way of thinking is operational. There is no guarantee when we apply it to the universe. There is no guarantee that we can understand everything.

Can we understand at least that God’s kindness, forbearance, and patience is exercised for us for a purpose: that we will find our senses, and confess, and repent.

For while there is no proof that we know everything, and especially everything about the universe, we can know God’s Grace, and respond with humble confession and repentance.

That is not so far out in the universe that we cannot get around to God’s kindness leading us to repentance and understand it well,

or well enough to trust God will be patient with us as we figure it out.

A day’s task.

Every day’s task.

When We Think We Are Done In And Gone,

The Light Reveals Another Day

Another Way …

Isaiah 30:26

Moreover, the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, like the light of seven days, on the day when the Lord binds up the injuries of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.

1 Peter 2:24

He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

Words of Grace For Today

As the Light of Christ shines brighter than the brightest sun, clearer than the clearest moon, then all our wounds he heals, all our wounds he makes strong. Where we thought we’d lost it all, where we thought we’d come to our end, exactly there the Spirit finds us, frees us from our past, transforms us into saints sent back into the darkness, into the darkness to share Christ’s Light and life, for all.

.

1.

Where are all the bridges in my life,

I looked for them in this quiet hermitage and there were so few,

maybe one, maybe two?

I’d done nothing to set the fires,

Truth I’d spoken at all costs,

I’d been breathing their smoke for years.

Where were all the bridges in my life?

Where were all the bridges in my life?

Was blessed solitude all … all I had left.

2.

Where are all the bridges in my life,

I thought I’d moved beyond the need for bridges in this home sweet home,

maybe still, maybe not?

Yet here they are bridges of my life,

Truth stands firm beneath them all,

standing solid, reaching far shores.

Where are all the bridges in my life?

Where are all the bridges in my life?

This blessed solitude thrives all in all.

3.

Where are all the bridges in my life,

I look for them in this quiet hermitage and there are countless,

surely one, surely all?

Streaming across, seeking this here peace,

Truth attracts in all kinds and ways,

Many struggle to make their way.

I’ve been breathing their smoke for years.

Here lead all the bridges in their lives.

Here start all the bridges in my life.

This blessed solitude is sought’n shared by all.

4.

Where are all the bridges in this life?

Where are all the bridges in this life?

This blessed solitude covers us now.

All is peaceful, all is still,

From it rises melodies of God’s Truth.

From it rises harmonies of God’s love.

Alone and connected through blessed music, dance, prayer

Bridges bring us all home at last,

across all rivers, obstacles, and dark valleys,

Bridges bring us all home at last,

where blessed solitude is sought’n shared in all,

where blessed solitude is sought’n shared all in all.

Truth Be Told,

By Grace Alone,

All is well at Last. All is well at Last. All manner of things are well at Last.

One More Goes Up In Smoke.

Jeremiah 9:23

Thus says the Lord: Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom, do not let the mighty boast in their might, do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth;

James 3:18

And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.

Which made me ponder bridges, and write these words.

Where are all the bridges in my life,

1.

Where are all the bridges in my life,

I look for them in this quiet hermitage and there are so few,

maybe one, maybe two?

I did nothing to set the fires,

Truth I spoke at all costs,

I’ve been breathing their smoke for years.

Where are all the bridges in my life?

Where are all the bridges in my life?

This blessed solitude is all I have left.

2.

Where are all the bridges in my life,

Why’s the truck I drove ‘cross them run hard aground, broken down again,

maybe faults, maybe sin?

I did nothing to break the wheels,

Truth I held at all costs,

I’ve been sinking in the mud for years.

Where are all the bridges in my life?

Where are all the bridges in my life?

This blessed solitude is all that remains.

3.

Where are all the bridges in my life,

My legs are stopped moving, my arms crippled up, pains alone remain,

finger free, maybe a toe?

All I could do is get ancient,

Truth I lost into the mists,

My heart’s not doing for what it’s meant.

Where are all the bridges in my life?

Where are all the bridges in my life?

This blessed solitude is my future,

It’s only a few days now.

4.

Where are all the bridges in my life?

Where are all the bridges in my life?

This blessed solitude covers me now.

Truth is hidden far and deep.

All is quiet, all is still.

There is one blessed bridge across I come,

home at last, sweet home, at last I am home.

Thinking of Eating What The World Offers?

It Can Kill Ya From the Inside Out.

Zechariah 8:23

Thus says the Lord of hosts: In those days ten men from nations of every language shall take hold of a Jew, grasping his garment and saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’

Romans 10:14

But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him?

Words of Grace For Today

Dreamers we are,

seeing all that is wrong,

yearning that it would be better,

giving great efforts, sometimes amazingly persistently powerful and heroic even,

until the day we see how empty our hearts are and that despite even the accumulation of all humans’ greatest efforts,

we are still lost

to a future

of despair

& doom

& death.

Until

we see clearly

how full our hearts are, and we can give thanks for all that we humans have achieved through the generations,

and we can give our greatest efforts all our concentrated energy and time so that all will be made right in our world.

Until we realize that our hope in ourselves is an empty, deceptive hope, so that, empty or full as we may see our hearts and world, the reality is our sin drives us further and further from anything good at all.

only then

can we accept

that we need not just to give thanks for humans’ great efforts,

but that we need give God thanks for all that we have received, which we certainly do not deserve, and never can earn.

Then,

with our hope, our lives, our everything

based on what God gives us

we can see the immensities of what is not right

and not despair,

we can see the humongous efforts made by humans through all time and the little differences that all makes,

and not depend on false, empty hopes nor despair,

And

Give

God

Thanks

for all that is Good.

Therefore we go as God sends us, back to the world that is so flawed, which we cannot fix, and give everything,

not to make our world right on our own,

But to give all people all that can be right,

most of all the relationship God makes with us

which is the only thing that can truly be right in our lives and in our world.

Not That At All. Instead

Sometimes We Fog Up,

Looking for the Way Out of Our Messy Lives.

God Sends Us Back Into the Mess, to ….

Psalm 31:7-8

I will exult and rejoice in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have taken heed of my adversities, and have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place.

Mark 5:19

But Jesus refused, and said to him, ‘Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you.’

Words of Grace For Today

All too often we ask and even try to demand from God something that we want, something that we are sure is what God would have for us, something that is a sacrifice of all we are and can be, and

God

says

No!

Instead God sends us right back where we’ve tried to escape from, from the grind of daily life, from the hell that daily life is (due to other people, usually), from the past that has dragged us so far into to the pit that we can barely see the horizon.

God sends us back, and tells us to

Tell everyone what God has done for us, rescuing us, healing us, forgiving us, renewing life in us, giving us hope again!

It is that we year and long for everything to be different so that maybe everything will be right in our lives.

Instead, God makes us right with God, so that no matter the circumstances that we live in and under, God can work through us to bring Grace to bear on more and more people.

So it is, this day, we enter our daily lives, looking like nothing has happened to us, and yet

everything has happened,

God has happened,

the Holy Spirit has transformed us poor sinners (actually we are very good sinners, just poorer beyond imagination for it) into saints,

those through whom the Light of Christ shines

through all the brokenness of life

into the heart of the matter, the heart of each person, the heart of God’s Kingdom come near.

Just another day for saints

to be God’s miracles

for others.

Though Autumn Carpets Abound, Again

Climate Change Teaches Us Now:

Even the Seasons Are Not A Sure Thing!

Psalm 33:4

For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.

Matthew 24:35

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Words of Grace For Today

While we yearn and long to make life better, we chase after all sorts of things,

which we hope will make life better,

But

they are dreamed of out of greed and selfishness

and they bring us more misery and hardships than we ever dreamed would be ours to endure.

Only as the Holy Spirit inspires us to yearn and long for God’s Grace and Blessings to be shared with all other people,

do we start to participate in God’s Kingdom,

wherein God’s Word provides us with the one sure thing,

Grace,

simple, unearned, undeserved, unending

awesome

Grace.

As the Spirit moves us God’s Word transforms us so that

our yearning and longing, our drive and and works,

and our hopes

focus on recognizing what we already have received

and

sharing it with those who have so little and need so much

just to live.

More opportunities this day

await us.

Thanks be to God.

The Moon Sets as the Dawn Breaks,

Who Will We Be This Day?

Proverbs 14:26

In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and one’s children will have a refuge.

Romans 8:35

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Words of Grace For Today

Knowing who we are is a great start to any day.

Often our confidence in who we are is lost in delusions and dreams unreal.

There is only one identity that we can know of ourselves that will bring us life with each breath and that is …

Yet there is, before we speak of it, so much that would tear us from that identity.

Not least of all is our own drive and dreams to be something worth being.

Through hardships we forge ahead, proving we are worth the breath we breathe.

Through distress we dig deep, proving we are made of goodness.

Through persecution we deny our persecutors their satisfaction, proving we cannot be conquered (even as we sink deeper into the abyss.)

We try to survive through famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword, but then the course of nature claims us in our deaths.

Oh, how futile all our struggles turn out to be. And how foolish our enemies have made themselves out to be, as they sink faster into the abyss with each move made against us!

There is no confidence we can have, about anything, least of all about ourselves that will save us.

We are doomed, all of us.

The one confidence that we have is a confidence given to us, though we do not deserve it, not at all, not at all.

That identity is one given to us by Jesus: we are the bearers and sharers of Jesus’ love for the world and all people ever.

From this love, nothing can separate us,

because God gives it to us each day, each hour, each minute.

Winds,

Four Strong Winds

Blow us around and off course.

Are We Blown Like the Waves Over the Rocks?

Psalm 62:9

Those of low estate are but a breath, those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath.

Luke 6:12

Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God.

Words of Grace For Today

The good times seem to have left us, and left us in the lurch, up a creek of shtako with no paddle or hands even.

We may think we are special, of great importance in the course of history even, or at least for a few people now.

Yet, of greatness or lacking any importance to anyone, we are all but like a breath that passes, of necessity for life to continue, to make room for the coming generations, for evolution to proceed bringing God’s blessings to us through the generations.

What are we to do?

Give up?

Go full bore ahead, damn the cost to others, making our way in life?

Bury our heads in the sand and pretend all is okay?

Lots of options, we people have come up with.

God offers the only one that does us any good:

to head to the ‘mountain’ and spend the ‘night’ in prayer.

The mountain is not so far, or merely a geographical location, just as the night is not merely the time between sunset and sunrise. The mountain is that place where we have encountered God, many times, sometimes even noticing. The night it that darkness that threatens to overwhelm us, against which darkness we can do absolutely nothing.

So we pray.

We pray, God save us!

God save us, sending four strong winds to blow us home again to you, home between the seas and foreign lands, home to rest in your breath, the fifth wind that gives us life, which is really the first wind,

the first wind of all life, and

the last wind.

Spirit.

You,

Are You Alone?

Or Not Alone?

The Sun Comes Up In the Cold.

Are You Cold And Alone?

Ezekiel 18:4

Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die.

1 Timothy 2:1

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone …

Words of Grace For Today

We go through life, most of us, most of the time, with our heads in the sand, so to speak, not able or willing to risk taking a clear view of what we are about, what we are really up to, what a chasm lies between what we dream of doing, think we are doing, and what we actually are doing.

‘Thank God, only those of us who sin will die!’ Pretend we do, then that we do not sin, or at least not enough to die.

That death is not just a physical death, but a complete death, GONEERs forever and amen.

Yet we all sin, we all die, we are all GONEERs, not just after our physical deaths, but already now, this day, as we pretend so drastically to be good enough.

In one way we can take morbid comfort in that we are not alone. In fact everyone is in the same boat with us, on the passage into hell, long before our time.

So what to do this day?

Then we realize that God knew we would be like this and certainly did not create us just to be lost to eternal death even before we lived a day of goodness. So Jesus came to rescue the boatload of us, to redeem us from our sins, to renew life in us, and to send us out to do the same for other people.

Thank God we are not alone! There’s a whole boatload of us (taking in all the people ever who have, now do, and will live) that Jesus saves, and sends out.

Tough day, it may seem to be, when we take in how far across that chasm we live from where we thought we would live. Then, as the Spirit demonstrates once again how much God has done for us to give us life, life even on those tough days, we get to celebrate each breath.

We get to make supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings each day for all other people, as we realize how much God gives us also this day, tough as it may be.
